Are you ready for spring?

There’s only one problem with spring: it comes after winter. Plumbing problems you didn’t even suspect in winter are going to rear their leaking, messy heads as the snow melts and the temperature warms up.

Here’s are six things that could go wrong —

Basement flooding: Flooded basements and homes make up over $3 billion in insurance claims annually. The cause? Spring snowmelts from extreme winters and sudden rise in the temperature.

Leaky pipes: It’s simple physics: water in pipes freezes and expands in winter. Pipes burst. Come spring, and you see leaks everywhere. Plus higher water bills and wet walls and funny smells.

Damaged Drainage: Things grow in spring. Roots spread and expand into your drain pipes, creating cracks, breaks and blockages. You’re wondering why the water pressure is so low.

Clogged pipes: Winter time was party time, and all your visitors and guests had those extra-long hot showers and baths. Now it’s spring, and someone has to fix all the hairballs and debris clogging up the drains.

Foul odors: Any stench is a warning that your home’s plumbing needs urgent attention. Odors can be caused by accumulated organic wastes, mold, fungus, stagnant water, and a host of other reasons. You need a check pronto.

Water heater breakdown: Water heaters work overtime in winter — so don’t be surprised if they start showing signs of wear and tear, especially if yours is over 10 years old and not energy efficient. Who likes a gush of cold water in the middle of a hot bath?
